Thomas Acomb Mouncer was convicted of the murder of his girlfriend Elizabeth Baldwin 31 and sentenced to death.

He strangled her at Olive Street, Middlesbrough on 13 May 1906.

After strangling her he surrendered himself to the police and told them that they would find Elizabeth Baldwin dead at their lodgings.

The prosecution said that the strangled her after becoming jealous about another man but he said that he did it in self-defence during a drunken quarrel.

They had returned home to their lodgings at about 11pm and during the night Elizabeth Baldwin was heard to cry out 'Don't Tom'.

A person said that they had previously heard Thomas Mouncer say that he would do for any other man that went with her.

He was found guilty and sentenced to death but recommended to mercy. On the night before his execution he passed a restless night and ate practically no breakfast in the morning. When he was told there was no hope of a reprieve he broke down completely.

Elizabeth Baldwin was also known as Elizabeth Colemen.
